Giovanni Trapattoni believes Everton defender Shane Duffy could be back playing within three or four months.
The 18-year-old survived a life-threatening injury after a freak accident during a training match on Friday evening.
Duffy suffered a laceration to his liver after colliding with the opposition goalkeeper when playing for the Republic against an Irish amateur team.
Trapattoni has confirmed the youngster is now conscious and he has been informed by doctors that he can play in three or four months' time.
"I have just spoken with our doctors and he is conscious," explained Trapattoni.
"We are optimistic and all the doctors are optimistic. They think in about three or four months, he can play.
"But it is important he is fit, he is conscious and he is not in danger as he was in the first two days."
