Steve Gohouri has agreed a new two-year contract with Wigan after making an impact since his arrival in January.

The Ivory Coast defender joined the Latics as a free agent following his departure from Borussia Monchengladbach.

He initially signed a short-term deal but has settled into his new surroundings well and is delighted to be staying.

"I love it here in England and in the Premier League," he said.

"I want to thank the manager for giving me the chance to prove myself.

"Now I want to concentrate on staying fit and getting in the side on a regular basis next season and help to push the club to the next level."

Martinez delight

Roberto Martinez is also thrilled to have secured the services of Gohouri, who scored a late equaliser against Hull City on Monday.

Martinez added: "Steve has impressed everyone at the club with his commitment, power and skill.

"He is desperate to prove himself at Wigan and I am delighted he has agreed to stay with us.

"He will add fantastic competition to the squad."
