Six Owls to fly, two to stay

Relegated Wednesday adjust to life in League One

Irvine: Rebuilding job

Six players have been shown the door as relegated Sheffield Wednesday adjust to life in League One.

Frank Simek, Sean McAllister, Etienne Esajas, Michael Gray, Leon Clarke and Francis Jeffers will be released at the end of June when their current deals end.

But goalkeeping duo Richard O'Donnell and Arron Jameson will be offered new two-year deals to stay.

Explaining his decisions, Owls boss Alan Irvine said he needed to build a squad which could bounce back to the Championship at the first time of asking.

He told the club's official website: "First of all, I would like to wish those players released the best of luck for the future.

"I am sure that most - if not all of them - will find clubs but I feel that we need to take the opportunity to rebuild our squad as we look to achieve promotion at the first time of asking.

"This summer gives us the opportunity to introduce the new faces that the squad needs to bounce back following relegation to League One.

"If the fans continue their fantastic backing they have shown since I arrived at the club, we will be in a very strong position in terms of our squad for next season.

"Our recruitment process has already started and I can promise Sheffield Wednesday supporters that we will leave nothing to chance as we look to bring in exactly the right kind of players that will help us gain the promotion we need."
