Sunderland have confirmed that they are to appeal against Alan Hutton's sending off at Hull City.
Hutton was sent off along with Hull striker Jozy Altidore after getting involved in a confrontation with the American.
Black Cats defender Hutton threw the ball at Altidore - hitting the striker on the back - and the USA international reacted by jumping up and headbutting the loan signing from Tottenham, leaving him with a cut eye, broken nose and chipped tooth.
Sunderland boss Steve Bruce was left furious by the decision of referee Lee Probert to send Hutton off and they have now decided to appeal the red card.
"We are appealing the severity of the sanction," said a Sunderland spokesperson.
If Hutton fails in his appeal he will serve a three-match ban for the dismissal, meaning his season is over with just two games left this term.
