Skysports.com understands Watford are in talks with Adrian Mariappa over a new deal at Vicarage Road.

Mariappa has established himself as a key member of Malky Mackay's side and has captained the team on a number of occasions this term in the absence of Jay DeMerit.

The 23-year-old only signed a new two-year deal in the summer of 2009, but the club are keen to tie him down on a longer contract to ward off potential suitors.

Mariappa, who has come through the ranks at Waford, is undertstood to be happy to pledge his long-term future to the club.

Watford are keen to reward the versatile defender for his progress and keeping Mariappa will provide a boost to the side as they battle to secure their survival in the Championship.
