Brighton are looking to hold talks with Inigo Calderon about prolonging his association with the club.
The Spanish full-back joined the Seagulls as a free agent in January and has been a huge hit at the Withdean Stadium since then.
His current deal is set to run until the end of the season, but Gus Poyet is keen to keep the 28-year-old past that point.
"We are ready to start negotiations," he told the Argus.
"The fact he is a free agent maybe makes it easier because it is between us and him. We are trying to do the right thing for him and the team.
"I suppose there are people who will be looking at him because of how he is playing.
"We want him to stay, he wants to stay. Like anyone it will be difficult but I'm pretty confident we are going to have him here for a long time."
