Middlesbrough boss Gordon Strachan has strengthened his squad on loan deadline day with the addition of Birmingham City's Jay O'Shea.
O'Shea joined Blues from Galway United for an undisclosed fee last summer after finishing the season as the League of Ireland side's top goalscorer.
Strachan has revealed chief scout Gordon McQueen was aware of his services before he joined Birmingham and believes his versatility will benefit Boro.
"Gordon McQueen knew of him before he went to Birmingham," explained Gordon Strachan.
"He can play wide on either side of midfield and is more direct than what we've got here."
Strachan was keen to bolster his midfield options with the likes of Gary O'Neil and Julio Arca sidelined with a sickness bug.
The ex-Celtic boss has confirmed no further players have contracted the bug, although he insists the club will continue to proceed with caution.
"We've not picked up anything else in the last 24 hours," he continued.
"We've kept Gary and Julio away, they're doing some cycling work on their own to keeping ticking over.
"We'll see tomorrow because it can drain you, this sort of thing."
