Middlesbrough have confirmed that striker Scott McDonald has been ruled out for two weeks.
The Australia international has only just returned to the side following problems with a hernia.
But now he has been struck down with a hamstring problem and will be sidelined until April.
"Scott will probably be out for a couple of weeks," said manager Gordon Strachan.
"It's a blow and it's typical of the way in which our season has gone.
"You expect to pick up injuries, but not to this extent."
Boro were buoyed by a win over Preston on Tuesday, but the squad has also been struck down by a serious virus, which has left Strachan with few options.
"We think we can isolate it and get rid of it by the weekend," he said.
"It's a 36-hour thing and if nobody else picks it up then we should be able to put it behind us.
"We've had a traumatic couple of days with injuries and illness and the team got changed three or four times."
