Midfielder in talks over new Anfield deal

Javier Mascherano claims the ball is in Liverpool's court as negotiations over a new contract at Anfield continue. The Argentina international midfielder is a key member of Rafa Benitez's squad and the Reds are keen to secure his services on a new long-term deal. Mascherano was strongly linked with a move away from Merseyside in the summer and was tipped to join European champions Barcelona. That switch for the tough-tackling South American failed to materialise and now Benitez is confident that the former West Ham man will follow goalkeeper Jose Reina in putting pen to paper. Mascherano has admitted that discussions are ongoing with the club and insisted he was awaiting a response having made his terms known. "I'm waiting for an answer from Liverpool," he said. "They know what I want so it depends on them and not me. We have been talking about the contract."
