Gary Caldwell knows the pressure is on in the battle to beat the drop as the Premier League season enters the home straight.

The Wigan defender was on target against Aston Villa on Tuesday night but could not prevent the Latics from suffering a 2-1 defeat at the DW Stadium.

It was a 16th defeat of an up-and-down season for Roberto Martinez's men which has seen victories over Chelsea and Liverpool but numerous lows, including a 9-1 drubbing at the hands of Tottenham.

Wigan go into Saturday's crucial home showdown with fellow strugglers Burnley just four points above the relegation zone with eight games remaining.

Caldwell could have faced brother Steven for the first time in his professional career this weekend, but the Clarets captain is expected to miss out through injury.

And the Latics centre-back knows it is now time for Martinez's squad to repay the faith the Spaniard has shown in them and rise to the challenge.

He told Sky Sports News: "The pressure is really on now and we have to stand up as players, enjoy that pressure and thrive on it.

"I'm sure that everyone at Wigan is looking forward to Saturday.

"The belief is still there, the manager is really positive and gives us the confidence to go and play.

"It is up to us as players to go out there and get a string of results and keep us up."
