Steve Bruce has revealed that John Mensah is a serious doubt for Sunderland's weekend clash with Wigan.
The Black Cats are set to face Roberto Martinez's Latics at the Stadium of Light on Saturday, but could be down to the bare bones by then.
Bruce has seen his plans for a crunch clash against his former employers severely hampered by mounting injury concerns.
The latest player to be struck down is Ghana international Mensah, with the burly defender struggling with a hamstring complaint.
Bruce said: "John Mensah has got a bit of a nick in his hamstring and we will see how he is in the next 24-48 hours. But he is an obvious doubt."
Sunderland head into the weekend looking to break a 10-match winless run which has seen them slump into the bottom half of the Premier League table.
Their inability to field a settled side has hardly helped their cause, with Bruce set to name his 15th different line-up at the back this season should Mensah fail to shake off his knock.
