Sky Sports News understands that Plymouth winger Jason Puncheon's move to Southampton is in doubt and that the Saints have turned to Crystal Palace's Neil Danns.
Puncheon is currently on loan at Saints' League One rivals MK Dons but reports emerged on Wednesday evening that he could be set to move to St Mary's.
Saints boss Alan Pardew was credited with an interest in cutting short the 23-year-old's time with the Dons, however, it now appears that the deal will not happen.
Plymouth were said to have agreed but reports suggested that a move would also require the consent of Dons boss Paul Ince.
It is therefore understood that Southampton have focused on Palace midfielder Danns in their search for new recruits as Monday's transfer deadline looms.
Palace have entered administration and players, such as Newcastle target Victor Moses, are set to be sold in order to raise funds.
Southampton, who have experienced their own financial problems in the past, could therefore look to take advantage with a move for former Birmingham player Danns.
