Inter Milan have reportedly switched their attention to Sporting Lisbon midfielder Miguel Veloso after being thwarted in their attempts to lure Cristian Ledesma.
The Italian champions had wanted to take Ledesma from Lazio but re-evaluated their options when the midfielder lost his battle to free himself from his contract, despite months of dispute.
The 27-year-old has been frozen out of the Lazio squad this term and was expected to depart in similar circumstances to his former team-mate Goran Pandev - who now plays for Inter - but the league's arbitration panel have rejected his case.
The Nerazzurri had been prepared to part with €9million for the former Lecce ace but owner Massimo Moratti admitted that the deal was now closed until the summer.
"We are working on another player for the midfield," he said.
"We will speak about Ledesma again in June also because (Claudio) Lotito (Lazio president) refused an offer. Now we'll see what happens."
Although Moratti was reluctant to name the club's latest transfer target, reports in Italy claim that Portugual international Veloso could be heading to the San Siro with winger Ricardo Quaresma going in the opposite direction.
