French winger close to joining Ankaragucu on loan

Rangers manager Walter Smith admits Jerome Rothen is on the verge of joining Ankaragucu on loan. Reports on Saturday had suggested that the French winger had already completed a move to the Turkish outfit, but that is not yet the case. The 31-year-old has made no secret of his desire to secure a switch elsewhere during the January transfer window, having failed to make his mark in Scotland. Rothen only moved to Ibrox on loan from Paris St Germain in September, but has struggled to hold down a regular first-team role. Most recently he has been left out of the side after contracting swine flu and being sent back to France for treatment. Smith admits he is preparing for the immediate future without the former France international, as an agreement with Ankaragucu is expected to be pushed through imminently. "Martin [Bain, chief executive] was dealing with that one," Smith said after seeing Rangers held 1-1 by Hearts on Saturday. "I think he is going there, although I don't think it's confirmed yet. But I think he is hoping to go there."
