Sunderland target Guy Demel has announced it is 'certain' he will stay at Hamburg, despite claiming a move to the Stadium of Light would have doubled his salary.
Skysports.com revealed earlier in January that Steve Bruce was interested in the defender and the Black Cats boss confirmed the reports on Wednesday.
But Ivory Coast international Demel has ruled out a move to England after being given reassurances from Hamburg chairman Bernd Hoffmann.
"I will stay with Hamburg. That is certain," Demel told the Hamburger Morgenpost.
"What made me happy was the telephone call that I had last week with our club boss Bernd Hoffmann.
"He said to me that he would be pleased if I would continue to play for Hamburg when I come back from the African Cup of Nations.
"And I also realised that many fans did not want me to go."
Demel, who is under contract at the HSV-Arena until 2012, added: "I could have made almost double in Sunderland what I earn with Hamburg."
