Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has confirmed his interest in Hamburg defender Guy Demel.
As revealed by skyports.com earlier this month, Sunderland have lined up a move to bring Ivory Coast right-back Demel to the Stadium of Light.
The 28-year-old, currently at the African Cup of Nations with Ivory Coast, is also thought to have attracted the attention of Italian giants AC Milan.
Bruce is waiting to see how the Demel deal develops as he looks to bolster his squad before the close of the transfer window.
"We have expressed our interest in Guy Demel, but he's in Angola and we have to wait and see how that develops," Bruce told the Sunderland Echo.
"I feel we are a bit short of cover defensively."
However, one player who will not be arriving at the Stadium of Light is Benfica striker Nuno Gomes.
Reports have suggested Sunderland are lining up a move for the Portuguese international, but Bruce has moved to rubbish the rumours
"There's nothing at all in this story about Nuno Gomes," added Bruce.
