West Brom manager Roberto Di Matteo insists he will give midfielder Giles Barnes time to prove his fitness at the club.
Barnes is currently on trial with the Baggies after Birmingham decided not to offer him a contract following his departure from Derby.
The 22-year-old has had an injury-plagued career to date and Di Matteo says a decision on whether to give him a deal at the Hawthorns will not be made lightly.
"He's training with us," said the Baggies boss. "We want to see how he is and what kind of fitness levels he's at.
"Everyone knows about his injuries so we just want a look.
"We will just see and make a decision further down the road. Obviously that's the reason behind him being here.
"There's no question about his ability, it's just his injuries and whether he can reach the levels of performance needed to play.
"You have to weigh a number of factors and make a decision. With Jerome Thomas (who also arrived on a free following a trial and long lay-off) the situation was different to Giles Barnes.
"He's still here with us and will stay with us for now - we haven't agreed a set number of time."
West Brom have a crunch game in the Championship on Monday night against top-of-the-table Newcastle.
