Walter Smith believes Rangers youngsters John Fleck and Danny Wilson could be jeopardising their careers by rejecting new deals.
The pair have 18 months left on their existing deals and Smith had hoped they would sign new long-term contracts with the SPL giants.
However, Smith feels Fleck and Wilson see their futures elsewhere, possibly in the Premier League, after turning down the chance to extend their Ibrox stays.
Smith could understand their decisions if they were out of the first-team picture and feels they might be putting money ahead of football by failing to commit.
"They're putting contracts before their careers," said Smith. "Both appear to see their future elsewhere.
"There was a time when a youngster's only ambition might have been to sign for one of the Old Firm. Now the young see England's Premier League as the one to play in.
"They're not handling their own affairs and letting other people do that for them at a stage when they should still be gathering experience.
"If they weren't getting a chance with the first team I'd say 'fair enough'. But they are getting an opportunity here.
"It appears it's not good enough for them."
