Chris Hughton has poured cold water on reports he is lining up a move for Southampton striker Rickie Lambert.
With Newcastle's bid for Leeds United hit-man Jermaine Beckford no nearer to being done, fresh links have suggested a South Coast swoop.
Lambert has proven a prolific goalscorer in League One and following his move to St Mary's from Bristol Rovers has plundered 17 goals to date this season.
While Hughton concedes his admiration for the Liverpool-born front man, the Toon chief is adamant he is not readying a bid.
He told the Evening Chronicle:"We aren't looking to bring Rickie here.
"He is a very good player and one who is doing well this season, like he did last, but not one we are looking at."
While a move for Lambert is not on the cards, Hughton claims he has other irons in the fire should Beckford stay at Elland Road.
"The ideal scenario is that you want to get in what you need as quickly as you can. You would like to get them in on January 1," he continued.
"That way they can bed in, but on most occasions it doesn't happen like that.
"I think we are fortunate that we haven't had many injuries and it is a tight squad.
"We don't need to bring a lot of new faces in. I don't need to bring in four or five players, that wouldn't be right."
