Inter defender progressing well after operation on fractured skull

Cristian Chivu is said to be doing 'OK' after being discharged from a Verona hospital following skull surgery. The Inter Milan defender suffered a fractured skull in the 1-0 win over Chievo on Wednesday after a clash of heads with striker Sergio Pellissier. The Romanian international will now spend time in a hospital in Milan where he will undergo further tests. The 29-year-old has been a key part of Inter's success this season and it remains to be seen whether manager Jose Mourinho will delve into the transfer market for cover this month. "Cristian is okay and proceeding well after the operation," said Inter doctor Franco Combi.

Further tests

"Cristian will spend a few more days in (a Milan hospital) to continue the tests, and he will then continue to rest." Chivu issued his own response to fans who he thanked for their messages of support over the past week. "It was truly nice to receive messages from friends and colleagues, managers and coaches from clubs both Italian and foreign," he said. "And from the fans, not only in Italy, but in Romania and Holland. I felt close affection from everyone and this certainly made me feel good."
