The veteran defender is expected to be out of action for up to a month.
The 2009/10 campaign has not gone entirely to plan for the World Cup-winning centre-half, with just one Serie A start under his belt this term.
He remains an important part of Jose Mourinho's plans, and penned a contract extension over the summer which will see him pass a decade of service at Giuseppa Meazza, but he has slipped down the pecking order of late.
Ironically, he may have come into contention over the next few weeks following a horrific injury sustained by Cristian Chivu.
The Romania international fractured his skull during Inter's 1-0 win over Chievo in midweek and is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
