Southampton have swooped to sign Jose Fonte from Crystal Palace.
The Championship club are struggling financially and now they have allowed Fonte to move to St Mary's for a fee believed to be in excess of £1million.
The Portuguese defender has been a strong performer for The Eagles since joining from Benfica in 2007 - but he has now accepted the drop down to League One.
"I'm really happy to be here," he told Southampton's official website.
"Don't get me wrong I was happy at Crystal Palace and I have only good memories of my time there, but I've made a decision that I'm very happy with.
"This might seem like a step back, but it may be two steps forward and that's how I see it.
"I want to be in the Premier League as soon as I can and this can be the fastest way to go there, so I'm really happy and I just want to meet my new team-mates, start training and start helping this club.
"I've seen the ambition from the manager and the chairman. I've seen the project and I want to be a part of it to get to the Premier League with them.
"I've come here with a focus on helping the club into the top division and I am very happy with the contract and how I have been treated by everybody, so it is a happy day for me.
"I just want to help the club, the team, my teammates and please the fans."
