Marseille have confirmed they have launched a bid to sign Inter Milan winger Mancini.
The 29-year-old joined Inter from Roma in 2008, but he has since dropped down the pecking order under Jose Mourinho.
He is now set to leave the club on loan with Marseille keen to take him.
"It is not that easy to find quality players that can be available this winter. Mancini has received several propositions but he is attracted by l'OM project," Marseille coach Didier Deschamps confirmed.
"Participating in the World Cup is one of his aims. He is a world class player, he can play one both sides. He is a very exciting player.
"With the injury to Mamadou Niang and the departure of Bakari Kone to ACN, I lost players that could bring speed and percussion.
"Mancini will not be necessarily be immediately at his best, he has to discover his team-mates. Anyway, there are so many matches to play in January that we will need every player."
