West Brom have struck an agreement with Auxerre to bring in Gabriel Tamas on loan.
The Championship high-flyers were linked with a move for the Romanian defender in the summer and are now set to recruit him on a deal until the end of the season.
The loan is subject to Tamas being granted a work permit and international clearance, but if there are no problems the Baggies would then have the opportunity to make the move permanent.
Tamas, 26, will not be eligible for the FA Cup tie against Huddersfield on Saturday.
But his arrival will provide manager Roberto Di Matteo with much-needed cover in central defence after Abdoulaye Meite left for the African Cup of Nations.
