Darren Fletcher has saluted the flexibility of Manchester United's squad as they battle with an injury crisis.

Sir Alex Ferguson has seen 13 players laid low of late, handing him an unwelcome selection headache.

Regular shuffling of the Red Devils pack has been required in order to field the strongest possible side, with many senior stars asked to play out of position.

The likes of Fletcher and Michael Carrick, midfielders by trade, have filled in at the back, while Nani and Park Ji-sung were deployed as wing-backs in the midweek UEFA Champions League clash against Wolfsburg.

The situation is far from ideal for a side chasing domestic and European honours, but Fletcher is adamant the strength in depth United can now boast means they are more than capable of riding out the storm.

"It was a satisfying performance because we had three midfielders in defence and changed the formation," the Scot said following the 3-1 victory in Germany on Tuesday.

"We had 13 players out and it shows the strength and depth of the squad. Michael and I played at the back and Paul Scholes, Darron Gibson and Anderson controlled the game from midfield.

"Wolfsburg had two or three free headers in the first half but apart from that they didn't really have much."

Quality

Fletcher is expected to once again be asked to fill a defensive role against Aston Villa on Saturday, but Nemanja Vidic could come back into contention at the heart of the back four following a bout of flu.

"Hopefully Vida will be back and I can move to right-back," added Fletcher.

"We have a few problems at the back and the sooner our defenders come back the better, but if not we'll have to rally round as a team like we did in midweek and try to put in a professional performance.

"We always go into games thinking we have enough quality to win the match, no matter what the team is.

"But we want our defenders fit because we have some big games coming up and need everyone available."
