Bayern Munich president Franz Beckenbauer wants to keep Luca Toni at the Allianz Arena but acknowledges that the striker looks set to leave in January.
The Italy international has suffered an awkward relationship with boss Louis van Gaal since the Dutchman took charge of the Bundesliga giants in the summer.
Events came to a head at the beginning of November when Toni stormed away from the stadium after being substituted at half-time during a draw with Schalke.
Van Gaal announced last Friday that he wants to trim his squad in the winter transfer window, and Beckenbauer reluctantly accepts that Toni is likely to depart.
He told Gazzetta dello Sport: "I like Toni as a player and as a person. He has done a lot in Munich and Bayern have given a lot to him.
"I would like to keep him but if he wants to go then he should go."
