Burnley boss Owen Coyle has been backed in his bid to bring David Nugent to Turf Moor on a permanent deal in January.
The Clarets boss is keen to secure the signature of the one-time England international, who is on loan from Portsmouth until January.
Chairman Barry Kilby has confirmed that the club are planning to strengthen when the transfer window opens again in the new year.
And he is ready to open talks with the Fratton Park club to ensure that Nugent becomes a full-time fixture in Coyle's squad.
The former Bury and Preston forward has been unable to make an impact on the South Coast and would welcome a return to his native North West.
Kilby said: "We're in discussions with Owen now to see what we can do.
"We're sitting down and seeing where we can strengthen.
"I think David would come here like a shot and we'd like him here but we'd have to negotiate with Portsmouth when his deal is up."
