Striker Shola Ameobi will return to training with Newcastle next week after his stint on the sidelines with a foot injury.
Ameobi started the season in fine form as he bagged five goals in as many games to claim the Championship player of the month award for August.
He then sustained a stress fracture to his right foot and has missed the last two months of action for the Magpies.
Manager Chris Hughton is keen to have Ameobi fit and firing as soon as possible as the St James' Park side target an immediate return to the Premier League.
"Shola will train with the reserves on Monday before joining in with the rest of the squad on Tuesday after Preston," he told the club's official website.
"He has made good progress and we're delighted to welcome him back. It was disappointing for Shola to miss out after the start he had.
"But he'll be looking to get back to that level and we certainly hope he can because he was excellent for us during those first few weeks."
And Hughton has confirmed midfielder Jonas Gutierrez will be fit for Monday's Championship trip to Preston.
Gutierrez sustained a thigh problem during the 3-1 win over Peterborough which forced him to pull out of Argentina's friendly with Spain last Saturday.
Hughton added: "Jonas is fine and will be in the squad. It was a minor problem he had but we're happy he's OK now."
