Arjen Robben has been forced to withdraw from the Holland squad ahead of their friendly against Italy.
The Oranje are set to face the reigning world champions in Pescara on Saturday.
However, they will do so without the services of talismanic winger Robben.
The Bayern Munich ace sustained a knee injury while on club duty against Juventus in the UEFA Champions League last month and has struggled to regain full fitness ever since.
The former Chelsea and Real Madrid man had been forced to sit out training with his international team-mates on a couple of occasions this week and it has now been decided that it is better for him to rest his injury.
Robben has therefore been returned to Bayern in order to make a full recovery.
Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk is expected to hand Hamburg forward Eljero Elia the opportunity to shine in Robben's absence.
