Hot-tempered striker has support of club president

Sampdoria president Riccardo Garrone has backed Antonio Cassano after he threatened to leave the club. The Italian striker made the threat after he was booed by a section of Samp fans following the 0-0 draw with Bari on Sunday, but the president has come out in support of the temperamental forward. Garrone rejected claims that Cassano should have to explain his comments, saying he was just frustrated after being attacked by a minority of supporters. "There is no need for the player to call me," said the Sampdoria president. "Cassano has expressed the disappointment of the whole team. "I am worried and upset by a small group of fans. I understand Cassano's anger. "I have not spoken to him but if he needs my forgiveness, he already has it." Samp currently lie third in the Serie A table, level on points with Juventus but seven behind league leaders Inter Milan.
