Burton Albion have made an enquiry to sign transfer-listed striker Anthony Elding from League Two rivals Crewe Alexandra.
Elding was told he can leave Crewe over the weekend by manager Dario Gradi after being left out of the squad which lost 2-0 at Notts County.
Gradi has confirmed the 27-year-old is now sixth choice in his plans and can leave the club on loan or on a permanent basis in the New Year.
He has been the subject of interest from Burton and Gradi is now waiting to see if his Brewers counterpart Paul Peschisolido will follow up with a bid.
"I have had to make a decision over Anthony because I have six strikers here and we cannot carry them all," Gradi told the club's official website.
"I have had to be fair to Anthony because there are players ahead of him. I could have said, 'you are sixth choice and get on with it', but he needs to be playing somewhere.
"If he has to stay here then we will be judged on merit like everyone else. Things can change very quickly in football, so who knows.
"I have had a message from Burton asking about the situation so that is something we will follow up."
