James Walker has returned to Southend United to fight for his place rather than extend his loan at Hereford United.
The striker has recently completed a month-long loan at Hereford and scored twice in seven appearances during his time with John Trewick's side.
The League Two club were keen to hang on to Walker, but Southend boss Steve Tilson has confirmed the 21-year-old has returned to Roots Hall.
"James returned for training today," Tilson told the club's official website. "Obviously we are very light on numbers at the moment so that is welcomed.
"However, what pleased me the most was that he genuinely wants to come back here and fight for his place.
"He's played some games and scored some goals which will have boosted his confidence and fitness.
"Hereford were keen to keep him and extend his loan, but James wanted to come back and we are pleased to welcome him."
