Claudio Marchisio is a major doubt for Italy's World Cup qualifier with Republic of Ireland because of injury.
The Juventus midfielder is struggling with a knee problem and he has not been able to take part in training for the last few days.
Italy are willing to give Marchisio until the last minute to prove his fitness ahead of the trip to Dublin.
"The player has a meniscus condition on the outside edge of the left knee," said Italy's team doctor.
"He will stay with us for two or three days and on Friday we'll evaluate whether he has recovered and can come with us to Dublin.
"Otherwise he will return home and the Juve medical staff will decide what action to take."
There are fears that if the injury does not clear up Marchisio may need surgery on the problem.
