Midfielder to play for reserves before learning contract fate

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez will decide within the next 24 hours whether to sign Cameroon midfielder Modeste M'Bami. Martinez has been looking at M'Bami in training for the past few weeks after the 26-year-old left French giants Marseille in the summer. M'Bami played for the Latics' reserves against Manchester City last week and is set to feature for the second string again on Wednesday against Blackburn. After the match a decision on a contract is likely to be made, with Martinez having been impressed by how M'Bami has improved his fitness.

Working hard

"Modeste will play once more in the reserves tonight, and we'll probably make a final assessment on him after the game," Martinez told the Wigan Evening Post. "He's been working hard to his fitness levels to where they should be, and now we can give him a proper assessment." However, while M'Bami could secure a contract at the DW Stadium, Martinez has confirmed Jurgen Macho will not be offered a deal. The former Sunderland keeper also played for the reserves last week, but has now returned to his native Austria following the end of his trial spell. Martinez added: "Jurgen's situation is different to Modeste, and he has gone back to Austria. "He wanted to have a look at us and we wanted to have a look at him. "But we have three good goalkeepers at the club, and we're not going to take things any further."
