The Clarets faced competition from Hull for Nugent but pipped their Premier League rivals to secure the services of the 24-year-old on a six-month loan deal, with a view to a permanent move.

Nugent made his name with Burnley's local rivals Preston, earning an England call-up with the Lilywhites before making a £6million move to Portsmouth in 2007.

Nugent's step up into the top flight hasn't gone according to plan, though, as he has been handed limited opportunities at Fratton Park.

The former Bury trainee has scored three goals in 34 Premier League appearances for Pompey - 16 as a substitute - and he remains on the fringes of the first team following the summer signings of Frederic Piquionne and Tommy Smith.
