Sheffield Wednesday have placed Francis Jeffers on the transfer list in the wake of his red card in the Carling Cup second round exit at Port Vale.
The former Arsenal and Everton striker, who has also been hit with a maximum club fine, was dismissed in the 37th minute after clashing with Vale skipper Tommy Fraser.
Second half goals from Kris Taylor and Rob Taylor knocked the Owls out of the competition and Jeffers' actions infuriated manager Brian Laws.
The one-time England international made an unreserved apology for his actions on Sky Sports News earlier in the day, but that was not enough to spare him from Laws' wrath.
"His conduct was totally unacceptable and something this football club will not tolerate from any player," Laws told the club's official website.
"We have therefore enforced the heaviest punishment available to the club with immediate effect and transfer-listed the player.
"The kind of behaviour enacted on Tuesday night is completely unacceptable and does not represent what Sheffield Wednesday stands for and clearly sets a bad example for the game of football."
