Sheffield Wednesday have re-signed Luke Varney on a six-month loan deal from Championship rivals Derby.

Owls boss Brian Laws has been looking to bolster his attacking options for some time and he has moved to bring Varney back to Hillsborough.

Varney scored two goals in four appearances during his loan spell at Wednesday last term and Laws was delighted to bring the 26-year-old back to the club.

"I am delighted that Luke Varney has agreed to join us on loan for the rest of the calendar year," Laws told the club's official website.

"He showed our supporters last season that he is a very capable player at this level who can create opportunities and score goals.

"Luke's energy and endeavour was something that really impressed me last season. He never stops running and will certainly give opposition defenders plenty to worry about in the Championship."

Varney is expected to go straight into the squad for this weekend's clash with Scunthorpe.
