Liverpool defender Daniel Agger faces a spell on the sidelines as he requires back surgery.
Agger has been struggling with the back problem for some time and it has forced him to miss the opening two games of the new season.
The 24-year-old visited a specialist to get to the bottom of the back injury and it has been decided to send him under the knife.
The operation is likely to sideline the Danish international for up to six weeks.
The news is a blow to Reds boss Rafa Benitez as Martin Skrtel is already struggling with a jaw injury which ruled him out of the midweek win over Stoke.
It means young Spaniard Daniel Ayala could be set for an extended run in the side, although Greek defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos could come into the reckoning once he ties up his move from AEK Athens.
