Carlisle United manager Greg Abbott has admitted he has held informal talks with experienced free agent striker David Connolly.

Connolly, who has recently been on trial with QPR, was released by Sunderland at the end of last season.

The 32-year-old former Wigan, Leicester and West Ham striker scored 13 league goals during his time at the Stadium of Light.

Connolly did not appear for the club last season and Abbott concedes his injury history is a slight concern.

However, Abbott remains a fan of the striker's quality and would be interested in pursuing a deal if the price was right.

Informal talks

"We have been talking to David about his future on an informal basis," he told the News and Star.

"He has had a long time out with injury and I'm not sure where he is at with that at the moment.

"He hasn't necessarily come under scrutiny as a signing, but if he was to leave QPR and wanted to play some football, then we would certainly be interested in a player of his ability.

"It would be very expensive and David has had his injury problems, so it is one we have just discussed to see where he is at."
