Simon Davey admits he is growing increasingly frustrated in his attempts to bring Charlton striker Andy Gray to Barnsley.
A deal is in place to take the Scottish front man to Oakwell but while a proposed takeover remains up in the air at The Valley no move can be rubber-stamped.
Davey is eager to have the well-travelled 31-year-old at his disposal next season but is weighing up alternatives as his patience wanes.
"The frustrating thing is we are on other people's timescales," he told Radio Sheffield.
"I have to decide whether to persevere with it or go somewhere else."
Meanwhile, trialist O'Neil Thompson has until the end of the week to impress enough to win a contract at Oakwell.
The Jamaica international was bright at the weekend in a pre-season friendly against Derby, as Davey weighs up whether to offer him permanent terms.
