Keeper considers Saddlers future

Walsall keeper Rene Gilmartin admits he may have to leave the club at the end of the season.

Gilmartin reluctant to sign extension if Ince stays on

Walsall goalkeeper Rene Gilmartin admits he may have to leave the club at the end of the season. Gilmartin's contract expires in the summer and he is reluctant to commit to a new deal, if Clayton Ince signs an extension. Veteran shot-stopper Ince is the Saddlers' No.1, with Gilmartin having been restricted to just seven appearances for the club this term. The 21-year-old would likely leave the Banks's Stadium with a heavy heart, but he concedes he is eager to be playing regular first-team football. "To say I'd like to leave the club is a heavy statement, but anyone realises this is the age where I can start playing the games in the lower leagues and maybe take a step back to take two steps forward," Gilmartin told the Express & Star. "I need to know what I want to do. I'll be 22 at the start of next season, so if Clayton stays do I want to go through the battle again of trying to move an experienced goalkeeper? "I don't want to sound like I'm having a go at the club because I do like the club and I like the way it's going, with the manager there's a great organisation."
