Inter have confirmed defender Marco Materazzi underwent a successful operation after breaking his cheekbone.

Veteran defender sidelined with fractured cheekbone

Inter Milan have confirmed defender Marco Materazzi underwent a successful operation after breaking his cheekbone in Tuesday's UEFA Champions League defeat to Werder Bremen. The experienced centre-back suffered the injury in Inter's 2-1 Group B loss after clashing with Werder's Markus Rosenberg in the first half. Materazzi initially remained on the field after being caught by Rosenberg, but the Italian international was forced to be substituted as his side slumped to a second place finish in the group stages. After being confirmed with a fractured cheekbone, the 35-year-old completed a successful surgery to alleviate the problem on Wednesday. An Inter spokesperson said the operation to reduce the fracture had gone 'perfectly' and that the veteran can now start the recovery process, although there has been no indication of how long Materazzi is sidelined for.
