The England Under-21 captain climbed the highest from Geremi's out-swinging corner to put Newcastle in front.
Doubled their advantage
They doubled their advantage just five minutes later when Danny Guthrie fired home past ex-Manchester City keeper Andreas Isaksson after being found by James Milner.
PSV pulled a goal back on 32 minutes when Ibrahim Afellay fired home through a crowd of players after Shay Given could only palm away Nordin Amrabat's shot from the angle.
The visitors left St James' Park with a share of the spoils thanks to Amrabat's 71st equaliser. The former VVV Venlo man lashed home a snap shot from 12-yards out.
