United star's brother agrees first professional contract

Macclesfield Town have handed a first professional contract to teenage striker John Rooney. The younger brother of Manchester United star Wayne had been in the first year of a scholarship deal at Moss Rose. However, he has impressed Macclesfield boss Keith Alexander sufficiently to earn a two-year professional contract. Youth team manager John Askey told the club's official website: "John has come on leaps and bounds in the last year.

Very strong

"He is still by no means a finished product, but if he continues to progress the way he has done then he will score a lot of goals for the club. "For his age he is very strong and he's now got the chance to work and train with the first team and hopefully show what he can do at the higher level." Rooney, 17, made his first-team debut as a late substitute against Barnet in March before starting the final game of last season against Chester City.
