AZ target Groningen star

AZ Alkmaar have trained their sights on Groningen defender Gijs Luirink.

AZ Alkmaar have trained their sights on Groningen defender Gijs Luirink.

Louis van Gaal is determined to ensure AZ do not fall back, having challenged PSV Eindhoven throughout the season, and is planning to make a number of summer signings.

Deals with Joey Gudjonsson and Maarten Martens have been wrapped up, while Kemy Agustien and Moussa Dembele are expected to sign on in the near future.

And that quartet could be joined at the Alkmaarder Hout by Luirink.

The 22-year-old is rated extremely highly and has a contract which runs until 2009, but AZ are confident of wrapping up his signature.

AZ are also scouting around the world, with the club believed to have watched a goalkeeper in Brazil and Sparta Prague starlet Michal Kadlec.

Danny Mathijsen, meanwhile, will return to AZ from RKC Waalwijk in the summer and is hopeful of making a positive impression on van Gaal.

Stein Huysegems, though, could be on his way out of AZ to Feyenoord.

The forward is being courted by the Kuip club and is said to be keen on a switch to Rotterdam.
