La Liga Round-Up

Atletico Madrid helped out city rivals Real after securing a 2-0 win over Barca.

Atletico Madrid helped out city rivals Real in the La Liga title race after securing a 2-0 win over Barcelona at Camp Nou.

Things started badly for Barca with Fernando Torres getting in behind the home defence in the first minute before scoring past Victor Valdes.

Ronaldinho should have levelled matters in the second half but saw his penalty go wide of goal after Samuel Eto'o was fouled in the box.

With Barca pushing for a late equaliser, Atletico broke away down the other end and settled the contest when Torres was fouled in the box for a penalty.

Torres dispatched the spot-kick, his 10th goal of the season, to dent Barca's title hopes.

Villarreal strengthened their European prospects for next term following a 2-1 win over 10-man Racing Santander.

It began so well for the visitors when Mario Regueiro netted, but Walid Regragui was then sent off for collecting two yellow cards.

The second half belonged to Villarreal with Diego Forlan squaring the contest before Juan Roman Riquelme netted the winner from the penalty spot.

Sevilla's impressive season continued following a 3-0 away triumph over Levante.

Antonito opened the scoring after 33 minutes with goals after half time from Ariza Makukula and Julio Baptista settling the game.

Daniel Kome's goal for Getafe was enough to give the side a 1-0 win over bottom of the table Numancia.

Albacete fought back from a goal down to beat nine-man Real Zaragoza.

Oscar Gonzalez opened the scoring, but he went from hero to villain after collecting two bookings.

Antonio Pacheco's penalty reduced the arrears before Conde Luis Garcia went sent off with seven minutes remaining.

The exciting contest at the Estadio Carlos Belmonte was complete when Pacheco's second penalty sealed the win.

Diego Tristan's late penalty earned Deportivo La Coruna a share of the spoils at home to Athletic Bilbao.

Pablo Orbaiz's goal five minutes after half time looked like being the match winner until Tristan secured a 1-1 draw.

Goals from Marcos Assuncao, David Rivas and Ricardo Oliveira helped Real Betis to a 3-1 win over Osasuna.

Assuncao opened the scoring before Valdo equalised, however that was as good as it got for the visitors.

Rivas fired the home side in front before half time with Oliveira's late goal ensuring Betis took the points.
