Jerome Leroy admits moving nearer to his birthplace was a prime factor in his decision to quit Guingamp for Lens.

The 29-year-old has signed a three-year contract with the Northern club after spending just one season with Guingamp.

The midfielder was widely expected to leave Guingamp following their relegation from Ligue 1 and he has settled on a switch to Lens.

Leroy admits Lens were always his preferred choice, particularly as they were the first club to register an interest in his services.

"Lens was the first club to contact me about three weeks ago," Leroy told L'Equipe.

"For Guingamp chairman Noel Le Graet, Lens has always been the priority.

"By signing for Lens I can return to the area where I was born. Coming to RCL is the most beautiful gift I could give to my mother.

"Firstly, I want to have fun and then I think the results will come. Here the facilities are exceptional, better than at Paris or Marseille.

"There is no excuse for not succeeding. I have played at PSG and l'OM and I am used to pressure.

"I made the right choice in coming to Lens. I have pins and needles in my legs."
