SOUTHEND UNITED have handed midfielder Jeff Minton a trial with the Division Three club after failing to reach terms with Leyton Orient.

The 28-year-old opted not to accept an improved contract with the Brisbane Road club in April and has joined the Essex side for their pre-season friendly against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday.

The former Brighton, Port Vale, and Rotherham United player will hope he can impress Shrimpers boss Rob Newman with his displays at Roots Hall.

Minton joins fellow trialists in the Aston Villa duo of John McGrath and Jay Smith, who have already appeared in Southend's last two friendlies.

Minton, McGrath, and Smith will appear in the friendly against Spurs with new signing Graeme Jones making his first start for the Shrimpers on Tuesday following the completion of his transfer from Scottish First Division side St. Johnstone this week.
