Former Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has returned to Napoli for a second spell at the Serie A club.

The 32-year-old spent last season at Bayern Munich, where he earned a Bundesliga winners' medal despite being limited to just three appearances as Manuel Neuer's deputy.

But Reina has now been released from his contract with the German champions after just one year, allowing him to move back to the club at which he spent the 2013/14 season on loan.

“Pepe Reina asked us to release him from his contract because he has the chance of regular first-team football as first-choice Napoli goalkeeper," Bayern’s deputy chairman Jan-Christian Dreesen said on their website.

“As a player, but especially as a person, he fitted in outstandingly with our team, so we naturally agreed to his request."

Madrid-born Reina began his career at Barcelona, where he made 30 senior appearances before spending three years at Villarreal.

in 2005, compatriot Rafael Benitez took Reina to Liverpool. The 'keeper went on to spend eight seasons at Anfield, playing 285 Premier League games and winning three trophies (the European Super Cup in 2005, the FA Cup in 2006 and the League Cup in 2012).

Reina then linked up with Benitez again while on loan at Napoli during the 2013/14 season, when he made 30 Serie A appearances before signing a three-year deal at Bayern.

The Spaniard has 33 international caps, winning the World Cup in 2010 and two European Championships in 2008 and 2012, but he has not appeared for the Spanish national team since last summer's World Cup.
