Neymar has been "provisionally suspended" for one match after receiving a red card in the aftermath of Brazil’s Copa America defeat to Colombia, officials said on Thursday.
But the Barcelona star could yet face a harsher punishment when South American federation CONMEBOL's disciplinary committee meet on Friday “to decide the final punishment”, they said in a statement on the Copa America website.
The Brazil striker had received his second booking of the tournament just before half-time for a handball, guaranteeing he would miss at least one match.
He was later shown a red card after the final whistle when he kicked the ball at an opponent, provoking a melee in which he also appeared to aim a headbutt at Colombian goalscorer Jeison Murillo.
The Copa America website initially reported a two-game suspension, before later clarifying that the 23-year-old has been suspended for one game in a preliminary decision.
A two-match suspension would rule him out of Brazil's final group game against Venezuela as well as a potential quarter-final clash.
Last summer, Neymar's World Cup was ended after suffering a back injury during Brazil's quarter-final win over Colombia.
